Music Video

As we have revisited our music video and watched them back i feel that mine does give any meaning and doesn't really fit with the conventions of a music video. So i researched some songs that had similar lyrics or songs that could have a similar meaning for example: Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan 'Especially for you'. Even though this video is slightly cheesy due to the time it was made, i felt that it had a similar meaning to our song 'Hold On'.

I thought that I could use the similar storyline of them missing each other and finally. With this i thought for editing techniques we could use split screening, dissolve effects etc. I just need to complete the storyboards so that it is clear what i want to acheive.

Hifana- Bunseye Cooking

This video used different shots, but again used jump cuts. This music video was surreal and very repetitive, but also used tracking.

I thought that this video was low budget as it is simple, uses bright effects, the editing sets music, funny, variety of shots, costumes are simple, cheap props, some animation, artificial lighting- already there from kitchen, simple technology, 2 locations and 2 characters.

Tunng-Jenny Again

This music video has an outdoor setting -location and mise-en-scene. It uses a mixture of different shots such as close-up as you never see the whole of the person. As the seeting is outdoors it uses natural lighting. Some parts of the video are unfocused which gets the audience to think and it made me want to carry on watching to find out what hapened, I felt that this particular video followed a narative for example:suicide. Also different from the other video is that as this s a slow song the cuts didn't go with the beat and he shots were related to the lyrics.

The message behind this video could be that nature vs rubbish as in one part of the video you see what looks like rubbish in amongst thegreen grass and nature.

Music Video-Trencher

This msuic video shows jump cuts, with the same mise-en-scene throughout apart from the beginning. The is only one person on set. Some of their cuts, cut to the beat of the music such as when the girls hair is moving. The person is always right to the frame, not to the centre.

All of the video makes sense, with the backwards and forwards and the juxtaposition.
The costume the young girl is wearing in the video is a red and white checked dress which is a typical school out fit for a primary school girl.

Demogrpahic

Before planning what we wanted our audience to get from the music video, we needed to know who our demographic was. We researched into the genre of Grime/Hip Hop and found that it was mainly aimed at teenagers of about 16 -17 years +. I feel that our audience is a niche market as it is very small and will not range out towards 20+ year olds due to the style of the music. Therefore i think that this type of music is unique to every individual.

Clips from 'Virtual Insanity'

Jamiroquai video

Jamiroquai's video -'Virtual Insanity' is of acid/jazz genre. It has typical conventions as looped beats are present, it combines elements of jazz, funk and hip-hop. There are also some props, lighting and costume.

In some parts of the song what the lyric say, actually happens in the video for example: when it says crazy world- the camera moves around in a circle and, it says i can see- points to his eyes.

From watching this video I found out a lot, how things can be made better when you come to edit. I also found out that in the video they used a basic room, added things to it and then created the effect throuhg the editing they used. I thought that this video was entertaining and challenging to its audience.

Genre

Grime is an urban style of music that is highly influenced by UK Garage and British Hip Hop.

From listening to this type of music i would expect to see in the video an urban setting, with a lot of outdoor and close up shots. I also expect to see the artist to be wearing hoodies and jeans, a typical stereotype of someone in the Grime/ HipHop Genre of music.

Here is an example of an artist of the grime/hip hop genre- Dizzee Rascal-Dance With me

Music Video Questionaire

As part of this project I needed to carry out research on the types of music videos different age groups liked to watch, whether they watched them for entertainment purposes or if the video helps them in liking the song. It also shows what people expect from music videos such as dancers, outfits, setting etc and also their favourite genre.

From the research i carried out on the questionaire I can conclude that 16-24 year old enjoy listening to RnB with favourite artists such as Ne-Yo and N-Dubs. Most of the people i asked said that they are not bothered about music videos being used for entertainment purposes, however only one person said no and only four said they were. I also found that most people (7/10) liked to watch the video as it helped them to like the song but they do prefer to listen to the music.

Music Video

For this project on music videos, the song we have chosen to look at is 'Hold On' by Lazee ft Neverstore. We have interpreted the lyrics as a love song and have therefore decided for our music video to follow a love narrative. Whilst doing the storyboards for the music video, we were trying to show something different in each line, however this became quite difficult as some of the lines repeat themselves and are also sung quickly, therefore not giving enough time to show another clip during in the time given.
I have found this song difficult to come up with different ideas without repeating what we already had as the song is quite repetitive throughout. It has also been difficult as we have all had different ideas and have been trying to make them fit into our idea of a love narrative.
However once we had thought of ideas for certain parts of the song, we then came up with other ideas for different sections.

Analysis of Lyrics

The song tells us how we should hold on to the ones we love and care for, and how when the people we love die or move on , how we find it hard to overcome the difficulties faced with this.
The songs lyrics are pronounced in urban slang giving you an idea of what genre it is and makes it more identifiable, giving a target audience of teenagers.

I have annotated these to give an idea of what we want to show our targeted audience and to give a guidance of what we to achieve.

Godwins theory of Illustration, Disjuncti ad Amplification

Illustartion- visual narrative tells the story of the lyrics (literal)

Amplification- visual narrative does not contradict the lyrics, but creates new levels of meaning (metaphorical). The theme of the lyrics is present in the visuals.

Disjuncture- visual narrative goes against or does not match the lyrics.
Here is an example if disjuncture:

Bordwell and Thompson

Spatial-Space
This is to do with space such as the setting and the location of filming
Relation between and manipulation of different points through simularity, difference and development.

Continuity editing produces 'analytical' space via an establishing shot, followed by a mid shot which is a smaller shot.

'Kuleshov effect' there is no establishing shot therefore only parts of the shot are seen.

Temporal- Time
This is to do with the time of the action and adds to the plots story time-order, duration and frequency.

Order of presentation of events can be manipulated- so changes story and plot relations which interrupt 'temporal order'.

E.G. flashbacks increase story knowledge and flash forwards creating enigma.

Duration- of story events within the plot can be altered via use of ellipsis. E.G. 'punctuation' shot change e.g. dissolve.

Graphic-
Draws upon 'pictorial qualities' found within mise-en-scene. E.G. patterns of light and dark, fine and sharpe, volume and depth etc...

Graphic continuity
'centre of interest throughout cuts, maintaining lighting level, avoiding strong colour clashes'.

Graphic discontinuity-
plays with juxtaposition of placement of focus figures, contrasts with colour and footage types and movement and stillness.

Rhythmic-
make it flow for a narrative by making sure each clip is the same duration.
Music video-keep to beat of music, make dips longer and shorter.

Here is an example:
